TomKat Center Postdoctoral Fellowships in Sustainable Energy - Selection Criteria

The TomKat Center will review applications based on:

  • Applicant qualifications
  • Merit of the proposal.  The proposal must be written by the fellow and reviewed by the Stanford faculty sponsor.
  • Relevance of the proposal to sustainable energy and its intersection with food, water, the environment, or human health.
  • The applicant’s career path and progress to-date.  If considerable time has elapsed since the doctoral degree, and that time was not spent engaged in research, the applicant is expected to describe in the application how the time was spent.
  • Letters of recommendation.
  • Number of years of postdoctoral research training since latest doctoral degree, with preference to applicants in the first three years of their postdoctoral training.
  • The extent to which the applicant brings new talent or new areas of research to Stanford. Candidates not currently at Stanford will be considered favorably. The goal of the fellowship is to act as a recruiting tool to bring the very best postdoctoral scholars to Stanford University. It would take extraordinary circumstances for the selection committee to rank internal candidates as highly as candidates that would be new at Stanford. Stanford candidates: those receiving their Ph.D. from Stanford and postdocs currently working at Stanford would need to display extraordinary promise and propose new research directions that are significantly distinct from their Ph.D. or current research and that will expand the University's capacity and forge new connections within the University. Stanford candidates should not propose to continue to work solely with the same professors or groups with whom they are currently associated with or on the same research already being performed at Stanford.
