Scrapworks Inc. is taking the technology developed for autonomous cars and applying it to the Food Industry.  The food industry amounts for almost 30% of global energy consumption, and is a significant contributor to global warming.  Food is the number 1 product in landfills, where it produces methane gas - a more potent greenhouse gas than CO2.

Scrapworks dramatically reduces food waste from industrial kitchens caused by faulty or non-existent demand forecasting. We also find pathways for food waste to become animal feed.

Data Visualization Engineer

Responsibilities:

You will be helping our engineers in a data visualization project. You will be building services to assist with video editing and data analysis.

The tools built will be used by our clients to easily manipulate, and understand their data.

Who should apply:

Anyone excited to make an interactive visualization to show trends and insights from data. 

Required expertise:

  • Basic to intermediate JS knowledge
  • Previous experience with data manipulation (python is prefered)

Data Science Engineer

Responsibilities: 

You will be helping our engineers integrate hyper-local events into the forecasting of our product. You will help us scrape the web and existing databases for the knowledge we need to feed our predictive models. 

Based on the insights gained on the data, you will be encouraged to propose an interesting thing to predict, and train a deep learning algorithm to do it.

Who should apply:

Anyone excited to find weird interdependencies in data streams - like the effect of a hot day on the consumption of tacos.

Required expertise: 

Be able to write an algorithm. Feel confident that you can  complete the following task in about 1.5 Days (knapsack problem):

Code an algorithm that can take 60 menu items from a given day and choose the “best” animal feed to make that day, that results in diverting the most amount of food waste. 

Preferred skills/Majors:

Computer Science

Design Researcher

You will be exploring different market segments, and understanding our user’s needs. You will be conducting deep-dive interviews with kitchen staff and restaurant operators to better understand how they make decisions. You will also be doing User Testing, to see how our products need to be developed and iterated moving forward.

Who should apply:

Self-starters who can write clearly and simply. Being able to speak Spanish is a bonus. 

Required expertise: 

Experience running user interviews of 1 - 1.5 hrs. We prefer students who have taken a dschool class or conducted anthropological field research.
