Mango Materials is a start-up company working to produce environmentally friendly, biopolymers from rapidly renewable resources and are currently focused on applications including textiles. We are seeking an intern to help with day-to-day research studies and laboratory experiments. This position is a Research Experience for Undergraduates (REU), sponsored by the National Science Foundation (NSF).

Responsibilities

The summer intern may assist in a variety of projects, depending on their background and the ongoing projects at the time of hire. Potential responsibilities include:

  1. Plan, design, and carry out experimental research
  2. Operate bioreactors to optimize growth and biopolymer production of microbial cells
  3. Perform research related to downstream processing to separate biopolymer from cell mass
  4. Conduct high-throughput screening of microbial cultures and media
  5. Calculate yields and rates of bioplastic production
  6. Assist in polymer processing, such as compounding, extrusion, injection molding, pelletizing, and/or 3D printing
  7. Maintain and prepare required solutions and help maintain cleanliness in the lab
  8. Perform laboratory and other company related duties designated at the discretion of the supervisor

Required expertise

The ideal candidate will have experience:

  • Conducting research in a wet lab
  • Working in the field of microbiology, biotechnology, chemical engineering, polymer science, process engineering or related area
  • Setting up and maintaining fermenters, HPLC, GC and/or gas flow analysis, or performing polymer characterization such as crystallinity, molecular weight, etc
  • Calculating chemical kinetics
  • Troubleshooting laboratory equipment with little direction
  • Performing literature reviews

Preferred skills/Majors

Applicants from all majors are encouraged to apply, especially those from Environmental Engineering, Chemical Engineering, Biological Engineering, Process Engineering, Biology, or Chemistry
