An outdated system of balloon flights collect snapshots of the atmosphere over where they are launched, but each of these balloons flies for only two hours. This means that over land data is sparse, and over ocean — where most truly significant weather forms — missing entirely. WindBorne is developing balloons which fly 60 times longer than usual and fill gaps underserved by existing atmospheric data tech, improving weather prediction and informing adaptation to the growing threats of climate change.
