Distribute Capital

Main content start

Distribute Capital is a new type of investment fund, that aims to connect public investors with renewable energy infrastructure projects. Keeping atmospheric carbon within sustainable limits will require a huge, sustained deployment of capital – but every year capital markets have fallen short. In 2019 alone, the funding shortfall surpassed $1.3 trillion.

The choke point is in financial markets. Right now, only private investors (private equity firms, venture capital, or certain pension funds) can directly invest in new renewable energy projects. Public investors (who represent fully 90% of the US population, and by far the largest and cheapest pool of capital) are stuck on the secondary market, buying corporate stocks or bonds second-hand.

Distribute Capital aims to repair this disconnection, and to give everyday investors the chance to put their money directly into renewable energy infrastructure projects. Doing so will provide those small investors with a quality, high-impact alternative investment, and provide project developers with a new source of flexible, inexpensive funding.
