RockFix is reimagining how we dispose of mine tailings (waste) for carbon sequestration and metal extraction for the Green Energy Transition. We’re exploring integrated hardware and software solutions to improve how we safely dispose of mine waste, and store CO2 in the 50 billion tonnes of mine waste the world produces annually. We are a startup exploring product-market fit through customer discovery (interviews and site visits), technology surveys, and crunching data! The Founder is an Activate Fellow, and the team has received funding from Breakthrough Energy, Harvard’s Presidential Innovation Challenge, and NYSERDA.

Responsibilities

Will vary (we’re an early startup). Assist the Founders in finding product-market fit by cataloguing where mine waste is produced across the world, in what chemical/geologic state, and whose liabilities these tailings are. Creating dynamic maps and databases of tailings deposits, and superimposing these with layers to identify co-located active indigenous territories, Justice40 or economically-disadvantaged areas, and regulatory responsibility. Assist in researching technologies that are under development in US national labs and universities, as well as off-the-shelf products that could be used to build a prototype. Survey the tailings monitoring industry to identify which technological products are used and how to improve the customer experience.

Interested in mining, cleantech, and startups? Apply if you want to understand how we mine and steward our natural resources, and how the mining industry works. You will also get high exposure to early stage startups in the process of pivoting their direction and products.

Required expertise

ArcGIS or special/geographic data manipulation and visualization.
Knowledge of how hardware and software products can be integrated.
Prior experience with startups is an asset.
