Mafix is an early-stage climate technology startup developing next-generation enhanced rock weathering (ERW) solutions for rapid, permanent carbon dioxide removal. Mafix produces highly reactive mineral-based fertilizers that both improve crop yields and remove CO₂ rapidly and at agriculturally relevant application rates. By leveraging existing industrial infrastructure and low-cost feedstocks, Mafix aims to scale carbon removal to the gigaton level while delivering real agronomic value for farmers.

Over the next year, Mafix is focused on optimizing carbon removal performance, advancing go-to-market strategy, strengthening agronomic evidence through field trials, and preparing for first commercial-scale deployments. Mafix is supported by Stanford’s Hight Impact Technology Fund, TomKat Center, and Sustainability Accelerator.

Responsibilities

During the summer of 2026, Mafix will be advancing both its technical and commercial readiness. Responsibilities may include:

  • Conducting research and providing R&D support, including analysis of published literature and patents related to rock weathering, agronomic co-benefits, MRV approaches, and regulatory considerations.
  • Supporting ad hoc projects related to partnerships, field trials, or strategic planning as the company prepares for first deployments.
  • Provide updates to techno-economic analysis models as new data becomes available.
  • Supporting go-to-market research for carbon credit buyers and agricultural partners, including landscape mapping of developers, registries, and corporate buyers.
  • Helping synthesize and communicate findings into internal memos, investor materials, client presentations, or offtake proposals.

Who Should Apply

We are looking for motivated, analytical, and curious students who are excited about climate solutions that can deliver real world value beyond just carbon removal. This role is well-suited for students interested in early-stage startups, natural science and engineering R&D, carbon removal, soil science, and / or applied environmental research.

Required Expertise

We encourage applicants from a wide range of backgrounds. Relevant experience may include strong analytical and research skills, comfort working with and synthesizing data, and an ability to work independently in an early-stage, fast-moving startup environment.

Preferred Skills/Background

The following skills are preferable, but not required:

  • Experience with data analysis or basic modeling
  • Technical writing or presentation development
  • Familiarity with carbon markets, life-cycle assessment, and CDR pathways
  • Familiarity with (geo)chemistry, soil science, agronomy, or field research

The following majors are preferable, but not required:

  • Earth Systems
  • Earth & Planetary Sciences
  • Environmental Science or Engineering
  • Chemical Engineering
  • Chemistry
  • Materials Science
  • Management Science & Engineering

This list is not exhaustive, so if you are interested in working with Mafix but your area of technical expertise isn’t listed, we encourage you to apply.
